They moved to Flagler County and first lived at Shell Bluff where he worked at Grimsley Grove. The family is found in the 1920 census of Flagler County, residing in Bunnell with him listed on page 12 with his occupation given as "Prison Guard," and she and the children are listed on page 16. They were the parents of six children;

Gene was the superintendent of the Bunnell Water Works for many years. He retired on 30 April 1978 from that position.
He claimed to be the first white baby to be born in Favorite area at a long-gone "place in the road" called Harwood (George Allen's and Eugene Curey's turpentine station).
He joined the Army at age 32 in 1943. He saw combat on the Normandy beaches on June 6, 1944 and later had some close calls at encircled Bastogne when serving with four-year unit, the 807th Tank Destroyer Battalion of Patton's Third Army. He was with two other GI's coming back to camp when Gen Patton had his fatal accident. Gene said they were about 6 miles away when it happened - when they got to the crash scene, others were getting Patten out of the wrecked card and into an ambulance - he was still conscious and mumbling something as they lifted him ups on a litter.

He was inducted into the Army in October, 1943, and had his basic infantry training at Camp Wolter, Texas. He went overseas in April of 1944 directly to Italy. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action on September 11, 1944. He worked in the construction of the Lehigh-Portland Cement Plant in the 1950's.
Stella worked in the Bunnell High School cafeteria in the late 1950's and took over as manager in 1962 after long-time manager Norma Durrance Turner retired.
She later worked for 32 years as an insurance agent with the Liberty National Life Insurance Company in the Flagler County area. During her time with Liberty National she was the recipient of numerous awards, including The Honor Agent award, Torch Club award and the District Leader award.
Stella was a member of the Citrus Growers Association and had more than 40 acres of citrus trees. Much of the fruit from her trees was used to supply Flagler and Putnam county school systems with fruit.
She was a member of the Putnam County Genealogical Society and served as chairman of the Putnam County Cemetery Task Force. As a member of this task force, she and other members of the committee were instrumental in locating and mapping the more than 100 small cemeteries scattered throughout the Putnam County area.
