Mathew Davis

Mathew (Mack) Davis, son of George Washington Davis and Jane LND, was born Sept 1854, FL and died 19 Aug 1925, St. Johns Park, Flagler CO, FL married 16 Sept 1882 St. Johns Park, St. Johns, now Flagler CO, FL, Frances E. (Fannie) Burnsed, dau of dau of Susan Burnsed and David Molton, born 03 Nov 1861, GA died 16 Aug 1914, St. Johns Park, St Johns, now Flagler CO, FL. Both buried Pellicer Creek Cemetery, St Johns CO, FL.

The family is listed on page 81 of the 1900 census of St. Johns CO residing in Haw Creek with his occupation given as "Farm Laborer," and his mother-in-law residing with the family. They are listed on page 61 of the 1910 census of St. Johns CO with his occupation given as "Farmer," with a brother and a nephew residing in the household. In the 1920 census of Flagler CO Mathew Davis is listed with the household of Charles Akins with occupation given as "Helper - Gen Farm."

He had homesteaded land in the Matanzas section of St. Johns CO, FL and moved to the Haw Creek section about 1885, living on Davis Branch then moving to Omega and purchasing a house from Tom Squire that had been used for offices by Squires in his sawmill operation. The house is currently (2007) owned by Kirk and Sheila Robertson and is the oldest continuously occupied house in Flagler Co.

He farmed and raised livestock and at one time worked at the Grimsley Orange Grove. They were parents of twelve children;

In 1917, he, according to his World War I Draft Registration Card, was living in Lake City, Columbia CO, FL where he was employed as a mechanist. He came to St. Johns Park as an engineer of the "Dummy" train that hauled logs to the sawmill at Omega, then worked in Dunnellon, Marion CO, FL before returning to this area where he gathered and sold scrap iron, drove a school bus, and cut cabbage buds to be used for Palm Sunday services. She was a 1942 graduate of Bunnell High School and in Feb 1943, was employed by the Southern Bell Telephone Company in Jacksonville, FL. In Feb 1953, she was named Grand Instructor of Dist. 24 in the Order of Eastern Star. Frances was a reporter for the Daytona Beach News Journal.

Zip’s family came to Flagler CO in 1934 and he attended school here. In Feb 1943, he was employed by Hooper Construction Company and was located in Jacksonville, FL. On 30 Oct 1943 he enlisted in the U. S. Army and was discharged in 1945. He was also employed for several years by the Wadsworth Lumber Company

He first signed on with the Flagler CO Sheriff's Dept. in 1952 and left the SO in 1953 to become the city marshal for the City of Bunnell - he had a patrol car and was on duty from noon until midnight, seven days a week.

Zip ran for Flagler CO Sheriff in 1956 and 1960 but was not successful in his bid for this public office. Then in April 1965, following the death of Flagler CO Sheriff Homer Brooks, he was appointed to fill this office with his commission to expire in Jan 1967. He was subsequently reelected to this office until 1980 when he was succeeded in office by Dan Bennett.

During Zip’s term in office, the most significant change that occurred in Flagler CO was the approval for ITT Community Development Corporation, a subsidiary of ITT New York, to begin development of a massive residential community to the called Palm Coast.

Karen was a member of the General Joseph Eggleston Johnston Chapter #2317, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Bunnell, Flagler CO, FL joining on 30 Jun 1993.

Chapter officers held were: Recording Secretary (1994-1996); President (1996-2003); Chaplain (2003-2004); and Register (2004-2006). She served as District III Director (1995-1996; 1998-2000).

Karen writes for local newspapers and magazine. She was a founding member of the Flagler CO Genealogy Society and served as its president. Issue;

He was a 1963 graduate of Paxton High School in Jacksonville and a 1965 graduate of Daytona Beach Junior College. While at DBJC he was a member of Student Government, President of Phi Mu Lamba Fraternity, editor of the yearbook, a cartoonist for the school newspaper and sweetheart of Xi Delta Tau Sorority. In Jan 1977, he was attending the Univ. of GA majoring in Advertising Design.

In Jan 1967, she was attending the Univ. of FL majoring in Special Ed and was employed at Sunland Training Center in Gainesville. She was a 1963 graduate of Bunnell High School and Daytona Beach Junior College.

While at DBJC, she was a member of the Student Government Association; President of Phi Sigma Sorority; Homecoming Queen; Miss Delta Beta Phi Fraternity and vice president of the sophomore class.

About a week prior to his death Mr. Davis was crushed under a falling derrick, the property of the Ohio Well and Drilling company, for whom Mr. Davis had worked for ten or twelve years. The breaking down of the derrick was caused by the pipe getting jammed while being withdrawn for a well just completed, and the young man was trapped so escape was impossible.
