Adolph Deen

Adolph Deen, son of John Henry Deen and his wife Adeline (Addie) Moody, was born 16 Sept 1888, Baxley, Appling CO, GA, died 08 Jan 1969 Ocala, Marion CO, FL,, married 28 Dec 1908, Bessie Annie Smith, dau of William S Smith and Peony M. LNU, born 22 May 1890, Lumberton, Robeson CO, NC, died 20 Mar 1968, Ocala, Marion CO, FL. Both are buried Espanola Cemetery, Espanola, Flagler CO, FL.

Adolph was in Volusia CO, FL for the 1910 Census working in the turpentine industry. His wife and his daughter Connie were in the household with the listing showing Connie being born in FL. Since George was born in GA, the family must have returned to GA after the 1910 census.

The family moved from Appling CO, GA to St. Johns CO, FL in 1914 where he was employed by Lambert and Moody as a wood’s rider in their turpentine operation. The July 1916 issue of the Bunnell Home Builder stated "a nice cottage has been erected at Ocean City for Mr. Adolph Deen, who has moved his family over from Favoretta." Adolph Deen was a Charter Member of Bunnell Lodge #200 F &AM.

When Flagler County was created in 1917, Adolph Deen was appointed by Gov. Sidney Johnston Catts to be the county’s first Tax Assessor. The family is listed on page 8 of the 1920 census of Flagler County with his occupation given as "Tax Assessor."

In Jul 1921, he succeeded Mr. J E Jones as the manager for the McArn store of Bunnell as Mr. Jones went to Jacksonville and is connected in a business with his son, William. Adolph moved his family to Bunnell into a home he had purchased from Mr. and Mrs. Sam Newbill. He later moved into the Brandenberg Home on Moody Blvd.

In 1922, the family moved a point between Daytona and DeLand where he had obtained employment with the Tomoka Land Company. In the 1930 census, the family is living in Bunnell with his occupation given as guard, county jail.

The family was Methodist. He was a retired Star Route carrier of the Post Office Dept. They were the parents of five children;

3. George Edward Deen, born 19 Sept 1913, Baxley, Appling CO, GA, died 13 Jan 1997, Intercession City, Osceola CO, FL, married 28 Jan 1933, St Augustine, St Johns CO, FL Zelda Zane Harrell, dau of John Calhoun Harrell and Mary Molcy (Minnie) LNU, born 2 Mar 1914, High Springs, Alachua CO, FL, died 26 Dec 2002, Good Samaritan Health Center, Kissimmee, Osceola CO, FL, both buried Espanola Cemetery, Espanola, Flagler CO, FL.

George was a superintendent with 40 years of service with Gulf Life Insurance Company before his retirement. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Palatka, the Scottish Rite and the Gulf Insurance Company Old Timers Club. He was also an honorary life member of the Palatka Railroad Museum. Issue;

(1) George Edward Deen Jr, born 2 Nov 1939, FL, died 08 Dec 2002, buried Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Sumter CO, FL (Sec 329, Site 198), married Ellen LNU.

He received a degree from the Univ. of GA 22 Mar 1963 and was commissioned a 2nd Lt in the US Army. He came on active duty 23 Apr 1963 and was retired 22 Dec 1984 as a Lt Col. Issue;

It is not known by the compiler when she married whom. State of FL Records show a marriage in Duval CO, FL in Dec 1968, a marriage in Osceola CO on 03 Apr 1986 and a marriage in Polk CO, FL on 10 Apr 1998.

5. John Adolph Deen, born 07 Jan 1918, Bunnell, Flagler CO, FL, died 23 Jul 2000, Munroe Regional Medical Center, Ocala, Marion CO, FL, married Estelle Marie Warren, born 27 Feb 1918, FL,died 05 Dec 1993, Ocala, Marion CO, FL.

He moved here from Flagler County in 1944. Mr. Deen was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church of Ocala and a member of Greenville Aviation Association. He was a U. S. Air Force veteran and a civilian flight instructor for the Air Force. He retired from All State Insurance Co. Issue;
