William Henry (Doc) Deen, son of Henry Deen and Nancy Miles, was born 06 Oct 1873, Appling CO, GA, died 04 Feb 1962, Bowman's Nursing Home, Ormond Beach, Volusia CO, FL, married 27 Sep 1896, May Belle Clair Carter, dau of Paul Hayne Carter and Myra Pauline Kennedy, born 27 Mar 1880, Appling CO, GA and died 18 Jan 1911, buried Ten Mile Baptist Church Cemetery, Appling CO, GA

He is listed on page 52 of the 1910 census of St. Johns County, residing in Espanola with his occupation given as "Turpentine Operator." The family is listed on page 12 of the 1920 census of Flagler County, residing in Bunnell with his occupation given as "Farmer."

Doc Deen was engaged in the turpentine business in Chipley, Washington County, Florida. He sold his interest in the Chipley operation and moved back to Appling County around 1900 where he farmed a place called Deen Deaden Farm, south of Baxley, GA (This was probably the farm that Columbus W (Lum) Deen owned in the 1890's and gave the farm the name DEADENING because of the hundreds of pines that were deadened in preparation for the clearing of the 400 acres).

Doc moved to this area in the winter of 1905 where he operated two turpentine stills - the Espanola Side Camps and the Dinner Island Camp. His brother, Robert W. Deen moved to Florida in 1906 and was a partner in the Espanola operation and Doc moved to Dinner Island Camp. He sold out in the summer of 1917 and the family moved to Bunnell and built one of the early homes there.

After spending some time in the turpentine business, the Deen brothers later became early potato farmers. Worth (Zeno Worth) Richardson, the husband of their sister Elizabeth Elmira [Lizzie] Deen, operated a still near St Joseph in present day Palm Coast.

While living in Bunnell Doc held various occupations such as a partnership with C A Smith in the Bunnell Garage & Auto Company; Emergency Demonstration Agent during WW II; worked for Jacobson Commissary Company on Florida East Coast Rail Road; worked in the Tax Collectors Office; was in charge of the cattle dipping for the eradication of the cattle fever tick in Flagler County; then returned to farming.

He served several terms on the Flagler County Board of Public Instruction and as a School Trustee, with his name on the cornerstone of Bunnell High School building as chairman of the Board of Public Instruction at the time the school was built in 1924.

He was a member of Bunnell Lodge #200, F&AM. Issue;

Jesse Eugene Bowers served in the U S Marine Corps during WW II, with over sea duty in the Pacific. He worked with overseas construction Companies.

He died in July 1980 in Bunnell, FL from a gunshot wound inflicted by his wife who was held in Flagler County Jail for six months, charged with first degree murder. She was tried and set free by a jury with the verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity. Issue;

Cherry graduated from Appling CO High School in Appling CO, GA on June 3, 1973. She received a BS in Forest Resources and Conservation from the University of Florida in 1978 and in Aug 1987, she was working for the Florida Division of Forestry in Lakeland.

Cherry was the first female forester to be placed in a rural forester position by the Florida Division of Forestry. She retired in 2000. When she retired, she was the Senior Forester on the Lake Wales Ridge Forrest near Frosproff. She served throughout her career on Incident Management Teams with the Division of Forestry responding to major wildfires and natural disasters throughout the state.

She was deployed to the major wildfire incidents in Flagler and Volusia Counties in the summer of 1998 as the Supply Unit Leader on the Flagler County fires, then as Logistics Chief on the Florida Green Team in joint command with the USFS overhead team Issue;

He joined the US Navy in during WWII and made it a career. He enlisted 10 Mar 1943 and was discharged 21 Jan 1946 - - he received the America Area Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with one star, World War 11 Victory Medal -- in amphibious forces.

Norman reenlisted on 05 Oct 1950 and was discharged on 28 Feb 1970 with the rank of Senior Chief Bosanmate with more than 23 years service. He made four trips to the North Pole and one trip to the South Pole including the last trip Adm. Byrd made to the South Pole.

He was in Operation Deep Freeze in 1956 aboard the USS Wyandot (AKA 92). During the war he received six good conduct medals, four stars for invasions and the American Occupation Bar for Europe and Asia.

Minnie Mae Johnston attended school in Daytona after completing the grades in the local schools and taught school for several years including Espanola, Bunnell, Melrose, and Ojus in Florida and in Ludowici, Georgia. She was the first teacher in the new school in Bunnell in 1909. She was the postmistress at Bunnell and she opened the first cafeteria at Bunnell High School. The family was members of the Bunnell Methodist Church. She was a charter member of Bunnell Chapter No. 93 0 E S and he was a charter member of Bunnell Lodge No 200 F & AM. Issue;

He completed a business course at Massy Business College in Jacksonville in 1935. He served in the US Army during WW II in the 26th Coast Artillery, Battery A, Camp Wallace, TX. He attended Officers Candidate School at Camp Wallace, Texas (Sep 1942 - Dec 1942) but was discharged after suffering an attack of asthma.

He and his brother Curtis, operated a grocery store in Bunnell for a short time, then he farmed with his father and later he and Curtis had a large farming operation of potatoes and cabbage in Bimini.

He served as a director with the Florida Fruit and Vegetable Association and was also a director in the Hastings Potato Growers Association.

In 1930, she was listed as a niece and living in the household of James H Bloudwork in Apalachicola, Franklin CO, FL. In 1932 she was in Bunnell, FL with her Mom, now Mrs. Cameron

Billy, as he is called by me, received a BS degree in Agricultural Engineering in Dec 1963 and a Master’s Degree in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Florida in 1965. Billy was a member of the University of Florida Band and I (Claude Sisco Deen, Jr), a member of the Florida State University Marching Chiefs -- we had some good visits when our schools played each other.

He was elected Florida FFA President in Jun 1958.When he was at the University of Florida he was elected as president of the National Student Society of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE). He was a Florida Blue Key Speaker and a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

In May 1963 he addressed the American Society of Agricultural Engineers in Miami Beach giving the key note address

In Jul 1963 he was elected as National President of Agricultural Engineering Students. He was on the dean's list at University of Florida and was chairman of the judiciary committee of the student government legislative council.

He was assistant agricultural engineer with the Florida Agriculture Experiment Station, Belle Glade, FL and in 1966, he and two other engineers developed a successful mechanical celery harvester. It cut and topped celery at 134 plants per minute - this compared to the work of 16 to 20 humans

He later was employed in the Tampa area as a consultant. He is a past president of the Deen Family Association.

Carol was a graduate of Hernando High School in Brooksville, FL. She attended Daytona Beach Community College, the University of Florida and Jacksonville University. She obtained here degree at the Jacksonville University in the Spring of 1963.

She appeared in the 1970 edition of "Outstanding Young Women of America." She received her BS degree from Jacksonville University and had taught (1970) in Daytona Beach, Trenton, and two years at Belle Glade Jr High School an in 1970 was a sub teacher in the Palm Beach CO school system.

Sgt. Deen served in U S Marine Corps during WW II, Company E, 2nd Battalion, 25th Regiment, 4th Division with overseas duty in Pacific Theater including the Marshall Islands Campaign, Kwajalein Atoll and Saipan, where he was wounded. He received Fourth Marine Division Presidential Unit Citation and the Pacific Theater Ribbon with two stars and the Purple Heart. He and his brother William operated a grocery store in Bunnell and farmed.

She was the second woman mayor in Flagler CO, FL. The first was Mrs. Edgar J Fraser, long time Painters Hill mayor. Margaret Jane served on the Bunnell City Commission from 1973-1979. She was the first woman commissioner in Bunnell (1973) and became the first mayor in 1976. Issue;

She was a 1962 graduate of Bunnell High School where she was a cheerleader, homecoming queen, a member of Tri-Hi-Y and FHA.

Susan attended Rollins College in Winter Park. At Rollins, she was chosen to be a cheerleader for the 1962-1963 Tars. She was a theater arts major and a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority.

In Oct 1966 she opened an Antique Bottle Shop in St Augustine at 9B Aviles Street. She had an outstanding collection of bottles and several rare specimens among her collections. She also carried a gift line of replica glass and other gift items. Issue;

She owned and operated danced studios in Bunnell and San Mateo. Later she owned and operated a dress shop in Hastings, FL. She taught School in Yulee, Florida.

Joseph was a graduate of Hastings High School and attending St Johns River Junior College. He was a farmer in Hastings, FL and a long distance truck driver. Issue;
