Abraham DuPont

In 1825 Abraham DuPont and family came to Florida and it is said "he took possession of a part of the original land grant and settled at Matanzas." His residence (before 1850) was in Section 14 of present Flagler County, just south of Pellicer Creek. He brought his slaves, operated several farms, built houses for his sons, and maintained the lifestyle of a typical plantation owner.

According to genealogical research by John C. Hall of Houston, MS, a distant relative of this branch of the family, it indicates that Abraham DuPont was the son of Charles DuPont, Rev Soldier of SC, and his wife Sarah Coachman. Mr. Hall also said that Abraham was married to Jane Verdier Pepper, born about 1789, died 04 Mar 1828, Jasper CO, SC and buried St Luke's Parish Cemetery, Jasper CO, SC near Ridgeland.

According to Abraham’s will, he had also acquired property north of St. Augustine, some near Moccasin Branch and on the St. Johns River, and some of the Gabriel W. Perpall Grant. In addition to his home on the plantation just south of Pellicer Creek, he maintained a summer home in the Hammock and a residence in St. Augustine.

His will was dated 17 June 1852 and witnessed in St. Augustine, FL. The name is not known to the compiler, but in his will he "set apart for the use of Mrs. Marie DuPont, during her natural life" a large sum of money.

He died the 15 Oct 1857, age 75, and is buried at the DuPont Cemetery in the Hammock (present Flagler County). Issue;

The first years of his life were spent under the parental roof, but when he attained school age and both his parents died, he became a member of the household of James Hart's, with whom he remained until fourteen years of age. At that tender age, he set out to make his own living and found employment on a dredge boat, remaining in that capacity for three year.

Subsequently he entered te business in Jacksonville, being so employed for about four years, at the end of which time he returned to St Augustine and opened a meat market, which he conducted for two and a half years.

He then became a partner of Jack Alexander of Brookyn, New York, engaging withhim in the buying and selling of horses. The animals were bought in auction in New York by Mr. Alexander and shipped to Jacksonville where Charles sold them to the highest bidder by the same process. He retained his connection in this business for two years but at the end of that time, opened at St Augustine, the Ponce de Leon Riding Academy and conducted this establishment successfully for about three years.

He then entered an entirely new field of business, becoming connected with the timber trade, being iterested in the business with the Florida East Coast Railway Company and remaining in this relationship with that corporation for about eight years, at the end of which time he disposed of his sawmills and sold his timber privileges on the east coast, his plant being located at Dupont in present-day Flagler CO, which was named in honor of him.

He then returned to Jacksonville, engaged as a dealer in horses and mules but sold out some time later and removed to Hastings where he engaged in potatoe farming and branched out into stock-raising. He also became well-known as a dealer in real estate being n agent for the Model Land Company, a subsidiary organzation the Florida East Coast Railway Company.
