Henry Ernest Duttenhaver

Henry E. Duttenhaver, born 09 Feb 1875, IL, died 21 Oct 1963, Kentland, Newton CO, IN, married 26 Jul 1900, Newton CO, IN, Lillie Wildasin, dau of J. A. Wildasin, born 15 Sep 1881, IN, died May 1974, Kentland, Newton CO, IN.

They came to Florida in 1918 and purchased farmland from Jim Parkhill in Bimini, located at the northwest comer of Quigley Bay on the road from Bunnell, later to become State Road No. 100.

In Dec 1919 Henry left Kentland, Newton CO, IN, moving his automobile, furniture, tools, a new team of mules, etc. in a freight boxcar and rode with the mules in the boxcar, a trip of about two to three weeks. His wife and daughter traveled by passenger train and the family lived in an ex-hotel in Espanola being renovated until their house was built in Bimini.

The family is listed on page 42 in the 1920 census of Flagler County, residing in Espanola and his occupation given as "Farmer - General." His nephew, Harold McAlexander, helped him with the farming and land clearing, traveling from Espanola to the farm over a sand and corduroy road with the team and wagon.

Probably Flagler County's first prefab house was ordered by the Duttenhaver’s from Alladin Home Catalog and erected on their farm. It was a two-story house with a clapboard first floor and shingles on the second floor, with front and back porches and placed on brick-post foundations. They had a Deleo electric plant that furnished power for house and barn.

About 1928, he operated a dairy with 20 to 30 cows. He was postmaster in Bunnell from 14 Feb 1931 until 21 May 1935. In Aug 1935, he and his wife opened a restaurant in the Pellicer building on State Highway No 4 (now US 1) in Bunnell, FL.

Mr. and Mrs. Duttenhaver and the two youngest children returned to Indiana in 1939. They were the parents of five children;

He remained in Indiana when the family moved to Florida. Issue;

2. Harry Frank Duttenhaver, born 23 May 1902, Kentland, Newton CO, IN, died 22 Feb 1991, Lake CO, FL, married about 1921, IN, Emma Evaline Hurst, born 22 Mar 1903, died 08 Jul 1978.

They moved to Flagler County in 1921 and resided in Bimini, returned to Ind for a short time and were in Indianapolis for the 1930 census where he was working in the automobile manufacturing industry. On returning to Flagler County, he was an assistant in the postoffice while his father was the postmaster. Issue;

(1) Margaret Jean (Peggy) Duttenhaver, born about 1923, IN, married 14 May 1939, Sanford, Seminole CO, FL by Judge Ware, Frank Paul Jones, son of H Pope Jones and Nora Lemack, born 28 Feb 1914, Graham, Bradford CO, FL, died 05 Mar 1949, Volusia CO, FL, buried Woodland Cemetery, Port Orange, Volusia CO, FL.

She attended Bunnell High School (FL) until Jan 1939, when she moved with her parents to DeLand. Issue;

Neil served in the United States Air Force in Korea and retired as a captain from the Florida Highway Patrol in 1987.

She graduated from Flagler Hospital's School of Nursing, St. Augustine, and took further training in Chicago and became associated with Cook County Hospital in Chicago in Sep 1933.. He was a graduate of the University of Minnesota with a BS degree. He was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi fraternity and in Apr 1934, was a public accountant with an office in Chicago. Issue;
