Alfred Julius Moritz Lasche

Alfred Julius Moritz Lasche, son of Robert Lasche and his wife Marie F. Nicolai, was born 04 Oct 1867, Milwaukee, Milwaukee CO, WI, died 06 Nov 1938, Palatka, Putnam CO, FL, buried Milwaukee, married 28 June 1892, Praire du Chien, Crawford CO, WI to Mary Oswald, dau of George W. Oswald and Theta J. Herold, born 17 Apr 1869, Praire du Chien, Crawford CO, WI, died 09 Oct 1952 Baltimore, MD and buried there.

He graduated in Pharmacy and General Science from the University of Wisconsin and did graduate work there. In 1890 he was placed in charge of the bacteriological laboratories of Wahl and Henius in Chicago, during which time he gave instruction to interns at Cook County Hospital along the lines of medical bacteriology.

In 1894 he established Lasche Institute in Milwaukee, where he educated students in brewing and distilling and established a bureau to give information on technical matters pertaining to the manufacture of foodstuffs. He published "The Lasche Magazine" on chemical and bacteriological research and during WW I, he was director of the acetone plants of Commercial Solvents Corporation in Terre Haute, Indiana.

After prohibition he became scientific director of the molasses plants of the U S Industrial Alcohol Corporation. From 1930 until his death he held the post of research chemist and zymotechologist with the Schenley Corporation, having supervision over an its laboratories.

In 1920 Dr and Mrs Lasche purchased land in St. Johns Park and built a house, known as "Washara Chalet Lasche," designed by their friend, Frank Lloyd Wright. The house included a laboratory for his research. He planted a citrus grove and during the infestation of the Mediterranean Fruit Fly he took a special interest and conducted research trying to find a way to destroy the pest. When in St. Johns Park they participated in the affairs of the community and held Christian Science Sunday School classes. As an accomplished musician he often gave piano concerts. They were the parents of one daughter;

Consuelo Mary Lasche, born 15 Dec 1895 Milwaukee, Milwaukee CO, WI, died 01 Dec 1965, married 18 Jun 1917, Chicago, Cook CO, IL, Gilbert Shaw Maxwell, son of Charles E Maxwell and Emma Shaw, born 30 May 1894, IL, died 06 Apr 1980, Palm Desert, Riverside CO, CA. The family moved to Daytona from Pittsburgh. Issue;

(1) David Lasche Maxwell b 28 June 1918 Milwaukee, Milwaukee CO, WI, died 29 Jun 2001, Basye, Shenandoah CO, VA, buried Arlington National Cemetery. He was an U S Navy Commander in WW II.

In Zeb Booe's (Compiler’s great grandfather) Diary, the following was written for Wednesday, May 16, 1944: "Lt David Maxwell, 4 engine bomber pilot, just finished final training at Jax Naval Air Base, leaving tomorrow for Chicago, by plane, by train to Milwaukee for 3 days with mother, then fly to San Diego, Calif, more training there, then fly to Pearl Harbor and later, on to war zone in Pacific.

Came here by train 1120, he and Grand M spend an hour with us. Leaves this eve by train 6:00"

(2) John Elmore Maxwell, born 18 Mar 1920, Pittsburgh, Allegheny CO, PA. Sgt Maxwell was with the US Army Band during WW II. Resided in Jamestown, KY.

(3) Gilbert Shaw Maxwell Jr, born 09 Feb 1922, Pittsburgh, Allegheny CO, PA, died 13 Jun 2005, Altamonte Springs, Orange CO, FL, buried Glen Haven Memorial Park, Winter Park, Orange CO, FL. He served in the US Navy during WW II.
