Alexander Martin McDaniel

Alexander Martin (Duke) McDaniel, son of J C McDaniel and Virginia Martin was born 21 Jul 1895, Jacksonville, Duval CO, FL and died 08 Jul 1972, Flagler CO, FL. He married Susie Helen Brown, dau of E L Brown and Alica (LNU) at the Brown Home, Sanford, Seminole CO, FL on 30 Nov 1919. Susie as born about Nov 1895, Raleigh, GA and 15 Jun 1956 at the Flagler Clinic and Hospital, Bunnell, Flagler CO, FL. Both are buried at Hope Cemetery, now Flagler Palms Memorial Gardens, Flagler CO, FL.

Duke came to Flagler County in Sep 1919 to take charge of the mechanical department of the Flagler Tribune shortly after he had returned from oversea duty with the U. S. Army in WW II. He had previously served as pressman for the Herald Printing Company in Sanford.

He worked for The Flagler Tribune from until 1924 when he and Melvin Blanchard Fuller took over the paper serving jointly as editor. He left the paper in May1935 when he was appointed postmaster of the Bunnell post office by Congressman Mark Wilcox

Duke was later associated with an insurance company, moving to Hastings in Jun 1948.

He was instrumental in the establishment of Flagler County’s Dancy Miller American Legion Post in 1920. He was a life member and a past commander of Flagler American Legion Post 115 and a member of the Forty and Eight.

Duke was a charter member of the Flagler County Chamber of Commerce and served as executive secretary of the organization. He was a member of Bunnell Masonic Lodge No.200 and represented Flagler County on the State Democratic Committee.

Susie was active in the First United Methodist Church and served as one of the first presidents of Unit 115 of the American Legion Auxiliary. Issue;

Martin Brown (Bo) McDaniel, born 22 Apr 1923, Sanford, Seminole CO, FL, died 12 Jul 1987, Duval CO, FL, married 02 Jul 1949, Folkston, Charlton CO, GA, Bette Shelton, dau of Owen Elliott Shelton and Rhea Roberta Hall, born 16 Mar 1927, Daytona Beach, Volusia CO, FL, died 08 Jan 2005, Terrace Nursing Home, Daytona Beach, Volusia CO, FL. Both are buried Hope Cemetery, now Flagler Palms Memorial Gardens, Flagler CO, FL.

Bo served in the U.S. Navy during WW II and was employed by the Gulf Life Insurance Company. He served as Mayor of Bunnell and when he retired, was Director of the Housing Authority in Flagler Beach.

In Nov 1975, Bette was named editor of The Flagler Tribune replacing Art Sennate. She worked at the Tribune for more that 12 years as advertising manager, business manager, and editor. She retired in Jan 1979.

Bette was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Flagler Beach Women’s Club, the Idlewood Club and the Order of Eastern Star. She was a past president of the Flagler County Historical Society and a past president of the General Joseph Eggleston Johnston Chapter 2317, United Daughters of the Confederacy. Issue;

Butch and Rosemary operated the Bed and Biscuit Kennels in Flagler Beach (2009).

She was a member of the Old King’s Road Chapter of the DAR and the General Joseph Eggleston Johnston Chapter #2317, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Bunnell, Flagler CO, FL joining on 15 Aug 1996 with eligibility based on the service record of Robert Cicero Montgomery, Company D, 9th GA Battalion, Light Artillery.
