Wade Hampton McKenzie

Wade Hampton McKenzie, son of Allen D. McKenzie and Mary Spivey, was born 31 Dec 1876 Dillon, Dillon CO, SC, died 07 Aug 1957, East Coast Hospital, St Augustine, St Johns CO, FL, married 08 Mar 1899, Dillon CO, SC to Fannie Nephles Page, dau of William H. Page and Aby Emeline (Abby) Elvington,. born 24 Apr 1876, Lake View, Dillon CO, SC, died 27 Feb 1954, Chattahoochee, Gadsden CO, FL. Both are buried Espanola Cemetery Espanola, Flagler CO, FL.

Between 1907-1908, Wade Hampton McKenzie sold his property in Whiteville, N C and, influenced by Major James Frank Lambert and the turpentine industry, he and his neighbor farmer, "Graham" moved to Dunnellon, Marion CO, FL seeking an alternative vocation to farming. Their moved was delayed by a long bout with typhoid fever, during which their daughter Christie passed away.

Shortly after arriving in Dunnellon, their daughter Fannie Mae was born and Mrs McKenzie's health was seriously impaired by the loss of her eyesight for a time. Major Lambert suggested she come to Bunnell to see the physician there. The family located at Relay Station, a turpentine still of Mr Lambert's, west of Bunnell. The family is listed on page 55 of the 1910 census of St. Johns Co, residing in precinct 7, with his occupation given as "Woodsman-Turpentine."

The family then moved to St. George, Charlton CO, GA where he was engaged in the turpentine business, however they returned to Flagler CO in 1918 and are listed in the 1920 census of Flagler CO, residing in Bunnell, with his occupation given as "Retail Merchant" with a boarder, Everett Stokes (the son of a friend in St. George, Ga), residing in the household, with his occupation given as a "Mechanic."

Everett continued to live with the McKenzie family while attending pharmacy school at the University of Florida at Gainesville, spending weekends, holidays, and summers in Bunnell working in Tom Holden's Pharmacy, until his marriage to Allie Cochran of Bunnell.

Wade Hampton McKenzie was a charter member of Bunnell Lodge #200 F & A M. He operated the Bunnell Mercantile Company, a general store, and the Inland Commerce Company, a feed and supply store, located in the brick building west of the railroad tracks.

On Saturday afternoon, 29 Jul 1922, in the director's room of the Bunnell State Bank, two meetings took place that added something to the history of Flagler County and marked the retirement of Major James Frank Lambert and the Witham System of banks from the active field and saw the ushering in of a new regime, headed by Col Claude Grady Varn and an entire new board of directors.

The deal was consummated when Messrs Lambert, Knight, and Holden, joined by the Banker's Financing Co of Florida, the same representing the Witham System of Banks, sold in toto their holdings to Col Claude G Varn and associates.

Col Claude G Varn was immediately upon transfer of the stock, elected president and Mr Walter Cody, of Haw Creek, vice-president.

The board of directors consists of the president and vice president and Messrs Frank Burrell, Harry Wallace Sessions, Wade Hampton McKenzie, George Moody and Robert Lee Harper.

Wade’s son, Victor joined him in the mercantile business in 1923 and they later built a large store on the east side of the railroad with rooms and apartments upstairs. In the days when the stores stayed open until 11 or 12 o'clock or until the last customer was taken care of on Saturday night, the Mercantile was a busy place.

Fannie was a charter member of the First Baptist Church of Bunnell, with the organizational meeting held in her home. She served as church treasurer and taught a Sunday School Class for many years, with the entire family being active in the church.

Around 1935, Mrs McKenzie and Mrs Lillie Wildasin Duttenhaver (wife of Henry Ernest Duttenhaver) opened a restaurant in the Pellicer Building on State Highway No 4 (now U.S. 1) in Bunnell with Fannie McKenzie soon buying her partner's interest. Fannie also managed the rental rooms and apartments on the second floor of the Mercantile building.
