Matthew Raulerson

Matthew Raulerson, son of Nimrod Raulerson and his wife Sarah Dukes was born on 15 Oct 1838 in Moniac, Charlton County, Georgia and died 5 Dec 1894 Espanola, St. Johns now Flagler County, Florida. On 27 Jan 1859 he married in Traders’ Hill, Georgia Ameldia Caroline “Millie” Metts, daughter of Redding Metts and Mary Edith Sapp who was born on 03 Apr 1841 in Coffee County, Georgia and who died on 13 Dec 1915 in Espanola, St. Johns now Flagler County, Florida.

They lived at Trader's Hill and St. Augustine before moving to Espanola where they resided until their deaths. Both are buried in Espanola Cemetery.

He served in the Independent Fla. Mounted Volunteers in the Seminole War and his widow received a pension for his military service. They were the parents of nine children;

1. Elias Raulerson was born 24 Jan 1860 in St. Johns County, Florida and died on 17 Jul 1911 in Cocoa, Brevard County, Florida. On 17 Feb 1890 in St. Augustine, St. Johns County, Florida he married Addie Anna Cason, daughter of Wherry C. Cason and Martha Jane Sandlin who was born on 08 Sep 1874 in Columbia County, Florida and who died on 19 Jun 1917 in Titusville, Brevard County, Florida.

Elias and Addie were the parents of seven children: Minnie Idella Raulerson, Charles Edward Raulerson, James Henry Raulerson, Effie Mae Raulerson, Jessie E. Raulerson, Raymond Raulerson, and Emmitt Elias Raulerson.

Addie married second on 03 Sep 1912 in Brevard County, Florida Ebenezer Gifford Kittles, son of Stephen Ambrose Kittles and Margaret Cora Bennett who was born on 15 Mar 1879 in Hampton County, South Carolina and who died in Apr 1959 in Brevard County, Florida

2. Matthew J Raulerson was born in Espanola, St Johns now Flagler County, Florida in Dec 1861 and died in 1935 in Ft. Pierce, St. Lucie County, Florida. He married Dakota C Swain, daughter of John Morgan Swain and Sarah Ellen Anderson around 1902. Sarah was born on 23 Mar 1882 in Fort Drum, Okeechobee County, Florida and died on 09 Nov 1946 in Ft. Pierce, St. Lucie County, Florida.

Matthew and Dakota were the parents of four children, Morgan Matthew Raulerson, Ruby Mae Raulerson, Lawrence Monroe Raulerson and Ellen Raulerson.

3. John W. Raulerson was born on 15 Jun 1864 in St. Johns County, Florida, He was appointed as US Postmaster for Espanola on 28 Aug 1895.

4. David Raulerson was born around1868 in St. Johns County, Florida.

5. Simon W. Raulerson was born 04 Feb 1872 in St., Johns County, Florida.

6. Andrew Raulerson was born on 12 Oct 1874 in St Johns County, Florida and died in 1953 in Marion County Florida. He 1917 he married Margaret Overman, daughter of Joseph R. Overman and Mary Julia Cotton who was born on 18 Sep 1872 in Dudley, Wayne County, North Carolina and who died on 25 November 1949 in Conner, Marion County, Florida. They were divorced in Marion County, Florida in 1945.

Margaret was first married to James Louis Cox (1854-1929). She is buried in Ocklawaha Bridge Cemetery, Lynn, Marion County, Florida.

7. Joseph Raulerson was born on11 Jan 1879 in St. Johns County, Florida.

8. Martha Raulerson was born on 10 Dec 1882 in St. Johns County, Florida.

NOTE: In her Flagler County Families book, Mary Holland also lists the following child of Matthew and Caroline Raulerson: “Mary Raulerson b 1877 Fla m Roger Berry b 1875 Fla. They are listed on page 79 of the 1900 census of St. Johns Co, with her sister Martha Raulerson residing in the household.”
