Introduction

This site contains information about early Flagler County Florida families, their ancestors and their descendants. The family in the photograph on this page is the Zeb E Booe family who moved to what is now Flagler County from Fountain County, Indiana in 1913.

Flagler County is one of the twelve East Coast counties of Florida and is located between St. Johns and Volusia Counties. Twenty miles of Atlantic coast line border Flagler County on the east with Crescent Lake forming a large part of its western border. Although Flagler County, Florida was not created until 1 July 1917, the history of the area begins much earlier. Histories and articles have been written beginning with the Native Americans residing in this area, thus the compiler has not delved into this phase of our county. It is the intend of the compiler to carry sketches of families on this web site that were residents before or by the 1930 census. Some families who came after the twenties and who stayed to contribute to the building of the county will be included as the data becomes available.

Many publications have been consulted to obtain the information contained on this site, however the majority of the family information came from Mary Ketus Deen Holland’s books, "First Families of Flagler" (1995) and "Bunnell High School 1917-1967"; and "Unto This Land," a history and genealogy of the St. Johns Park area of the county published by the St John's Park Pioneers and edited by Mary Ketus Deen Holland. Mary Kete, as we called her, was born on 24 Nov 1917 in Bunnell, died in St Augustine on 11 Feb 2009 - she will be greatly missed by us all.

The information on Flagler Countians in Military Service came exclusively from The Flagler Tribune, a local newspaper. A majority of the obituaries (some 2,796 published between 1919 and 1981) also came from The Flagler Tribune. The weekly newspaper was registered on 6 Feb 1913 as The St Johns Tribune with the name being changed to The Flagler Tribune after the county was created. The Flagler County Historical Society allowed me to research their bound copies of The Flagler Tribune from 1919 through 1980. They also have these issues on microfilm as does the Flagler County Library in Palm Coast.
