Harry L. Hughes, 72, of 8 Cerrudo Lane, Palm Coast, died unexpectedly Saturday in Baltimore, Md., while visiting relatives.

He was a retired credit investigator for the Credit Bureau of Baltimore and a partner in a Baltimore credit bureau.

He came to Flagler County in 1972 from his native Baltimore.

A Navy veteran of World War II, he was a member of St. Mark by the Sea Lutheran Church and the Lions Club, both in Palm Coast.

Hughes was a former president of the Lost Chords, a Baltimore organization fir laryngectomees.

Part of his service included going to several hospitals in the Baltimore area to show other laryngectomees how to master esophageal speech.

He also worked with speech students at Johns Hopkins Hospital and at Good Samaritan Greater Baltimore Medical Center.

He was a volunteer for research studies at Walter Reed Army Hospital and at the University of Maryland. He was active in the Flagler County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.

Survivors include a son, a brother and two grandchildren.
