MRS. CARMEN MARIA ABRAMS
(Mrs. Furman Tony Abrams)
(15 JUN 1916 – 23 FEB 1976)

Thursday, February 26, 1976 - - Investigation is still continuing in the murder-robbery incident which occurred Monday night in the Hammock area north of Flagler Beach.

Carmen Abrams was pronounced dead on the scene from a gunshot wound in the temple and her husband Furman" Joe" Abrams remains in critical condition at the Shands Teaching Hospital in Gainesville.

The Hammock Area has been known for its serenity in the past but all that was forgotten as the shooting victims were removed from the Easy Way Food Store. A neighbor told officers at the scene that he heard the gunshots at about 8:30 p.m. but thought they were firecrackers

Going to the store moments later to visit the Abrams, he found Mrs. Abrams sitting behind the counter dead. Abrams was lying on the floor.

Abrams briefly regained consciousness at the scene but was only able to describe the killers as “a boy and a girl.”

With little information in hand, law enforcement officers throughout Flagler and St. Johns counties mounted an intensive but fruitless manhunt throughout the night while Capt. Larry Moody and other Flagler County sheriff’s deputies conducted an investigation at the scene.

Roadblocks were established immediately with members of the Flagler County Sheriffs Department and units from St. Johns County setting up at the Flagler-St. Johns county line.

Members of the Flagler' Beach Police, Department aided with another roadblock which was established at the northern city limits of Flagler Beach.

One couple was taken into custody early Tuesday morning and questioned at St. Johns County Jail but was later released.

The two robbers were described to be in their 20’s and were driving a dark colored station wagon.

Residents in the area said the store didn't do very much business and it was doubtful if the robbers got more than $50 in cash.
