THE FLAGLER TRIBUNE
Bunnell, Florida
Thursday, June 19, 1947

George Royal Benson, a resident of Flagler Beach for a numbers of years, died at 6:28 last Saturday evening in the Halifax hospital in Daytona Beach following a heart attack at his home a few hours earlier. He had complained several times a few days prior to his death of pains in his chest, but his passing was unexpected.

Mr. Benson was 56 years of age, and a native of St. Joseph, Michigan, but was a resident of Florida since 1930 when he came to Florida with his family. He resided in Bunnell several years where he was in business, but established his home at Flagler Beach 10 years ago where he built his home.

He graduated from the University of Florida in 1938 and since that time has been engaged in educational work. He was supervising principal of the Hawthorne schools for about seven years, and would have returned to that position late this summer.

Although he maintained his home at Flagler Beach, he was active in the community life of Hawthorne while residing there during the school term. He was a member of the Hawthorne Masonic Lodge; the organizer of the Christian Brotherhood; and an active member of the Methodist Church.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Baptist Church at Flagler Beach, with Rev. A. A. Godfrey and H. H. Surrency officiating.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Margaret Benson Chaffee of Flagler Beach; two sons, Robert Benson of Tampa, and Dudley Benson of Gainesville; one sister, Mrs. Helen Benson Marsh of Tampa; two brothers, H. M. Benson of Bunnell, and Harry Benson of Tampa.

The burial rites were conducted by Bunnell Masonic Lodge at the graveside in Hope cemetery.

Pallbearers were G. E. Gay, B. K. Wheeler, F. D. Williams, J. W. Brown, L. A. Sherouse and Frank Capell, all members of the Hawthorne Masonic Lodge.
