Walter Jefferson Burton, Jr., 74, who lived in Flagler Beach from 1968 to 1974, died recently at Fair Play, S.C. of an apparent heart attack.

Before his retirement in 1968, Mr. Burton had been employed for 44 years by Southern Railway Company as a railway clerk.

He was born July 30, 1905 in Atlanta.

Mr. Burton made his home in Spencer, S.C. for 43 years. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Spencer, the Brotherhood of Railway Clerks, and a charter member of North Rowan Civitan Club.

During World War II, he served with the National Guard.

He also served as chairman of the North Rowan School Board from 1958 to 1964, and was on the town board for many years and also served as town clerk, was elected vice president of the AFL-CIO in North Caroline in the mid-50’s and was once appointed a state health commissioner.

Survivors include his widow, Joncye; one son, four daughters, 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services and burial was in North Rowan.
