THE FLAGLER TRIBUNE
Bunnell, Florida
Thursday, April 23, 1931

Two Negro youths, Eddie Campbell and Willie Espry, both about 16 years of age, were walking along the Dixie Highway four miles north of Bunnell early Saturday morning when a car struck them, killing Espry and inflicting a scalp, wound on Campbell.

The wounded Negro boy said that the driver of the car did not stop after the accident occurred. He also stated to Sheriff McKnight that he did not know what kind or a car that hit them, but that he thought it was colored green.

After the accident the wounded Negro stayed with his dead companion until Saturday morning when a passing motorist stopped here and notified the authorities.

A coroner's inquest was held with Justice of the Peace, W. Lee Bartlett conducting the court, the jury finding that Espry came to his death by being struck, by an automobile driven by unknown persons. Campbell told Sheriff McKnight that he and his companion lived in Orlando and had caught a ride on a truck to come to Bunnell and were seeking work in the potato fields of the county. He said that the truck carried them by town, and then put them off near the spot where the accident occurred.

The dead Negro was buried by the county after efforts to get the boy's relatives to come and claim the body had failed.
