THE FLAGLER TRIBUNE
Bunnell, Florida
Thursday, May 15, 1919

Charles Byrd, a young man of Hastings and well known in this city, was shot and almost instantly killed Sunday evening by a Negro by the name of Jerry Grant, evidently grazed by liquor and looking for trouble.

Mr. Byrd went out of his house to remonstrate with the negro the later flourished his revolver. Mr. Byrd pulled his own gun and in the twinkling of an eye both fired, both receiving mortal wounds from which they died in a short time.

Mr. Byrd was well known here and well liked by all. His untimely death is deeply regretted.
