THE FLAGLER TRIBUNE
Bunnell, Florida
Thursday, February 1, 1962

Mrs. Marie Evelyn Boyd, 96, Flagler Beach, the daughter of Florian A. Mann, founder of the Halifax Journal, the ancestor of The News-Journal papers in Daytona Beach, died in a nursing home in Daytona Beach Monday.

Mrs. Boyd had lived in the Halifax Area since her family moved to the settlement of Daytona in early 1883.

Her father founded the Halifax Journal on February 15, 1883. Mrs. Boyd set the type for the first edition, printed on cloth because of the lack of newsprint. In 1899 she took over the publication of the Journal and continued it until 1900, when it was sold. In 1901 she went to Fort Myers to teach school.

A few years later she moved to Palatka, where she married a river boat captain.

She was instrumental in having the statue of Chief Tomokie erected in Tomoka State Park, and she wrote the story that the late Fred Dana Marsh depicted on the statue.

Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Hildegarde Henderson, Tampa; Miss Helen Mann, San Francisco; and Mrs. Jane Dickinson, Coral Gables.

Mrs. Boyd had resided in Flagler Beach for the past few years before entering the nursing home.
