Charles Pickett, 26-year-old white man of Flagler Beach, lost his life in the East Coast Canal early Sunday evening when he fell from a pontoon pipe line at the dredge Tennessee and drowned.

Pickett was missed from his post of duty and other workmen were sent to his home and other points seeking him, failing to locate the man a search was made for him and the canal bottom was dragged Monday morning under the direction of C. D. Toler, Flagler Beach coast guardsman. The body was recovered about 1:30 Monday afternoon with parts of the face having been eaten off by crabs which infest the canal waters.

County Judge H. A. Eisenbach held an inquest Monday afternoon, the jury's verdict being that “Charles Pickett came to his death by drowning, apparently due to falling from a pontoon pipe line which he was, presumably, walking while on duty, said mentioned pontoon pipe line being from the dredge Tennessee, owned and operated by the Shell Producers Corporation of Tampa.”

Pickett was a nephew of Ed Eatman of this county and had formerly lived here, removing to Ocala a number of years ago, and returned to this county more than a year ago.

The body was prepared for burial by an undertaker in Daytona Beach. Funeral services were held and burial made at Ocala this afternoon.
