Mrs. Edith Pope, wife of State Senator Verle A. Pope of St. Augustine, passed away Tuesday morning in a St. Augustine hospital following a lengthy illness.

She was a lifelong resident of St. Augustine and was well known for her literary talents, having written a number of novels with a Florida setting, including "Colcorton," a best seller.

She was graduated from Florida State College for Women with an AB degree in 1928. She also was a graduate of Bryn Mawr College, Pa., and received her master’s degree from Columbia University in 1930.

She was a member of the American Pen Women and a member of Trinity Episcopal Church. She was 55 years of age.

She was the daughter of the late Senator A. M. and Mrs. A. M. Taylor.

Mrs. Pope was a prolific writer from her childhood. She wrote during her boarding school days and her father published a vanity column of poetry for her in her teens. Her first important novel was written, during the time she spent in Biloxi, Miss., while her husband was in military service.

Her other works include "River in the Wind," a novel dealing with the Seminole War; "Old Lady Estroy," and "Half Holiday." She also authored a number of children's books, including "Bigotry Chameleon."

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Richard E. Watson of Ft. Lauderdale.

Funeral services will be held Thursday from the Trinity Episcopal Church at 11 o'clock. The Rev. Charles M. Seymore, Jr., will officiate.
