THE FLAGLER TRIBUNE
Bunnell, Florida
Thursday, January 1, 1931

The only serious disturbance occurring in Flagler County during the holidays was the killing of Sam Thomas, Negro, early Monday morning in the Negro section of town. It was said that Thomas and several other Negroes went to Daytona Beach Sunday night and when they arrived back at Thomas’ home in the early hours of Monday, someone shot Thomas twice, killing him almost instantly.

Sol Kendrick, Negro, suspected of the killing, was arrested by Sheriff J. H. McKnight and placed in jail. This morning the coroner jury with County Judge George R. Benson, directing, and after hearing the testimony, the jury returned a verdict that Thomas came to his death by gunshot wounds inflicted by unknown parties.

Immediately after the jury’s verdict Kendrick was rearrested on a new warrant sworn out by another person. Kendrick was again placed in jail and will be given a preliminary hearing next Tuesday morning at which time it will be determined whether these is sufficient evidence to hold him for the grand jury.
