Thelma Thompson, 12-year-old Negro girl, who lived on the Bertha farm in the Bimini section, was instantly killed by lightning Wednesday afternoon while fishing in a drainage canal near the Bertha farm.

According to reports the dead girl and a, number of companions, including members of her family, had been fishing in the canal but when it appeared a storm was rapidly approaching most of the group started for home. However the girl, who lived on the Bertha farm together with several other children, was standing against a tree when the bolt struck. She fell, or was knocked into the canal, by force of the lightning.

She was rushed to Bunnell but was dead upon arrival. It was said she probably died instantly.
