THE FLAGLER TRIBUNE
Bunnell, Florida
Thursday, November 7, 1946

Deputy Sheriff M. R. Teters shot and killed Jose Adrian Trujillo, said to be a Dominican, in front of the Green Tile Cafe here after Teters was called to the place to investigate some trouble there.

Trujillo was in an automobile and accompanied by Louis Henry Todd, reported to be a Jamaican. Witnesses said that Todd was refused service in the front section of the restaurant because he was a negro. Both men argued over the refusal and the officers were called to the scene.

Teters found Trujillo in the car with Todd nearby, and while talking to Todd, testimony at the inquest reveals, Trujillo drew a pistol and after being told twice by Teters to put it away was shot when Trujillo was reported to have injected a bullet into the automatic pistol.

State Attorney Murray Sams of DeLand was called and an inquest was held Saturday morning. The jury absolved Teters. It was declared the deputy shot in self defense.

Todd was released about noon Saturday into the custody of an immigration officer and the body of the slain man was placed in a St. Augustine funeral home. It has since been shipped to Dominica.
