Oldest lifelong county resident dies
Richard Walter "Dick" Cody Jr., who members of the Flagler County Historical Society say was the oldest living lifelong resident of Flagler County born after the county was formed, died Saturday at his Cody's Cor¬ner home. He was 85.
Born July 5, 1918, in Hawks Park (now Edgewater), Cody was brought home from the hospital by his parents Ruth and R. W. Cody Sr., to the home built by his father in 1907. He died in the same home.
Cody's Corner was named for the Cody family, which has lived in the area for more than 100 years.
He attended Bunnell High School and graduated from Bolles Military Academy in Jacksonville. He received a bachelor's degree in agriculture engineering from the University of Florida.
He was a farmer and a rancher in Haw Creek. In the late 1970s, he and his wife, Barbara, built Cody's Corner Country Store, ending his days of farming cabbage and potatoes. But he maintained a citrus grove, flower garden and tended to his yard.
Following the death of his wife in 1994, he retired from the store and spent much of his time with family and woodcrafting.
Present and past memberships include the Flagler County Historical Society, Flagler County Cattlemen's Association, Flagler County Fair Board, Master Gardener, Farm Bureau, Soil Conservation and First United Methodist Church of Bunnell. He also attended the First Baptist Church of Bunnell.
His college roommate, Gilbert Tucker of Rockledge, remembers him fondly.
"Dick was one of the best people I have ever known. I could not have received a better gift than to room with him at the University of Florida. He was dependable, honest, truthful, and I loved him like a brother," he said.
Brenda Boyd of Haw Creek described Cody as a man who always looked out for the residents of Haw Creek.
"Every time you would see him, he'd ask about your family and if help was needed, he was right there to assist," she said. "He will not only be missed by the residents of Haw Creek, but by the entire county."
Cody's grandson, Dowlin Cody, said his grandfather was an inspiration.
"I am so proud of (my) heritage. I saw God's hand at work in everything he did," he said.
Cody is survived by his daughter, Melanie Bennett, three sons Dan, John, and Rick, all of Haw Creek, eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service is scheduled for today at 10:30 a.m. at Espanola Cemetery.
