Mona Era Hornsby, 82, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, at her son's home in Port Charlotte.

She was born Dec. 12, 1922, in Johnstown, Fla., to James and Violet Crews.

Mrs. Hornsby accompanied her husband to his many stations while he served 30 years in the U.S. Army. Before his retirement, she was active in community activities at each of their various duty stations. She was a Cub Scout den mother in Japan, a Brownie leader in Florida, a member of the Explorer Scouts committee at Fort Rucker, Ala., committee chairwoman for charities in Japan, and a volunteer for the Army Community Services in Germany.

She was an assistant bookkeeper for Beaver Industrial Supply Company in Jacksonville, Fla., a manager for a diamond and jewelry store at Tachikawa Air Force Base in Japan, a sales clerk in a dress shop, and a long distance telephone operator for Southern Bell, in addition to her volunteer work.

After retiring to Port Charlotte in 1971, Mrs. Hornsby worked as a tax consultant for H&R Block in Fort Myers, Fla., and later she frequently assisted her daughter, Martha Miraglia, at her restaurant, Marty's Village Restaurant, in Port Charlotte. Mrs. Hornsby was an avid crafts person and seamstress. She made many beautiful porcelain dolls, quilts, and embroidered clothes for her family and friends.

Mrs. Hornsby is survived by her two sons, Michael H. (Carol) Hornsby of Social Circle, Ga., and Winston D. (Annette) Hornsby II of Port Charlotte; a son-in-law, Wayde Carroll of San Jose, Calif.; eight grandchildren, Heather Carroll of San Bruno, Calif., Wayde Carroll of Grass Valley, Calif., Scott Hornsby of Schoten, Belgium, D.D. Hornsby of San Francisco, Calif., Danah Snell of Savannah, Ga., David Hornsby, U.S. Navy, Hawaii, Joshua Hornsby of Louisville, Ky., and Ashley Purdy of Port Charlotte; and great-grandchildren, Jack Carroll, Claire Carroll, Ashlyn Snell, Elizabeth Snell and Sloane Hornsby. She was preceded in death by her husband, Winston D. Hornsby, in 1986; and her two daughters, Mona Carroll and Martha Miraglia in October 2004.

A visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2005, at Kays-Ponger Funeral Home in Punta Gorda, Fla., followed by a graveside service at 2:30 p.m. at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens in Punta Gorda.
