Mary Ketus Holland, 91 of St Augustine, Fla., died Feb. 11, 2009, at her home.
She was born in Bunnell, Fla. Mary Kete graduated from Bunnell High School in 1935 and in October 1935 entered Southern College of Business at Orlando for a commercial course. She later completed a business course at Massey Business College, Jacksonville, and worked several years as a stenographer and bookkeeper for the Florida Re-employment Office in Jacksonville, then a year after marriage, became a full time housewife.
She was the historian of the Deen Family Association and wrote (and I know I may forget a few-CSDeen): "Our Heritage, A genealogy of the Descendants of Philip Deen"; "Our Heritage, A Genealogy of the Descendants of John Miles"; "First Families of Flagler" and "Bunnell High School 1917-1967." She was the editor for "Unto This Land, A History of the St. Johns Park Area of Flagler County, Florida and the Pioneer Settlers and Their Descendants" published in 1987 (and three times since) by the St. Johns Park Pioneers.
Mary Kete joined the United Daughters of the Confederacy on May 14, 1962, with eligibility based on the service record of Joseph Marion Johnston, Company I, 25th GA Inf Reg. She was a co-founder of the General Joseph Eggleston Johnston Chapter No. 2317 and served as president (1968-70, 1970-72). She served as district II director (1960-62, 1978-80) and division treasurer (1964-66). She has received the Jefferson Davis Medal from the Division.
Graveside memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Pellicer Creek Cemetery.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Grant and Mindy Holland, Sante Fe, N.M.; grandchildren, Vincent Holland, Sarah Holland, Katie Holland; great-grandchildren, Jocelyn Holland and Zachary Grantham Holland III.
