Dewayne Dorsey Metts, 71, Hwy. 100, Bunnell, went to see his Heavenly Father on Sunday, May 31, 2009 at Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House, Palm Coast, after a long illness.

Dewayne was born to Dorsey and Mary Lucille Metts on August 22, 1937 in Statesboro, GA.

Dewayne moved to Flagler County in 1953 where he attended and graduated from Bunnell High School. He met and later married the love of his life, Mary Jane Edwards, November 8, 1957 and had three children.

Dewayne worked at the Lehigh Cement Company in Flagler County while also enlisted in the Army National Guard Reserve. Later he owned and operated the Metts Supermarket until sold in 1967. From 1967 until 1974 he owned the Thriftway of Bunnell.

In 1974 after semi-retiring, he traveled and spent time with Mary Jane and the kids. He took great pride in his family and attended every activity of theirs during that time. He was also an active member of The First Baptist Church of Bunnell and an ordained deacon for many years. He loved his Lord and took his faith seriously by always serving others in any way he could.

Dewayne had many hobbies he loved including softball, hunting, fishing, church functions and cookouts with his children and grandchildren. His favorite was catching a pile of fish and having the family over.

Dewayne was not only honest and highly respected as a businessman and friend to all, but a man with the utmost integrity and a huge heart.

Dewayne is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Jane; three children, Sandra Herr (Chuck), Scott Metts (Donna), and Greg Metts (Denise); seven grandchildren, Stacey, Brian, Sean, Taylor, Austin, Zoee and Lainey; his brothers and sisters, Mary Helen Baker, John Metts, Deborah Henderson and Ronald Johnston; his dog, Buddy; and many more family and friends.
