James Oscar Shope died Sunday, Nov. 28, at his residence in Savannah at the age of 50 years, 11 months and 27 days after a lengthy battle with Cancer. He was born in Waycross, Ga, Dec.1st. 1942 and was the son of Allen and Molly Shope. He was married to the former Glenda Dodgen.

Mr. Shope was a U.S. Army Veteran and had recently retired from the National Park Service at Shiloh National Park. A member of the National Rifle Association. He worked as chief of maintenance for Shiloh National Military Park for 11 years before retirment. He previously worked at St.Simons Island National Seashore in Georgia and for the National Park Service at Washington Oaks State Park and Fort Matanzas, St. Augustine Florida, having resided in Savannah for the last 11 years. Mr. Shope was also an avid fisherman and hunter.

Services were at 1 PM. Wednesday, Dec. 1, at Shackelford Chapel with burial in Neill Cemetery. Don Harold Lawrence officiated.

Other than his wife, Mrs. Glenda Shope of Savannah, he leaves two sons, James and Bryan D. Shope of Savannah; two sisters, Mrs. Shirley Waters and Ms. Nita Shope of St. Augustine, Fla.; and two brothers, John Tillman and Allen Shope Jr. of St. Augustine.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Bobby Shope.
