Korona - Father Joseph Zawada, OCD passed away peacefully at St. Joseph's Carmelite Monastery on June 27, 2021.

One of seven children, Father Joseph was born and raised in a small village in Eastern Poland. After witnessing the murder of his father at a young age, Father Joseph helped his mother raise their family through the trails of World War II and subsequent rule.

At age 19, Father Joseph answered the call of Jesus and entered the novitiate in Czerna to become a Discalced Carmelite Priest. After his ordination in 1964, Father Joseph taught seminarians and lived in several Carmelite monasteries throughout Poland, eventually transferring to a Polish Carmelite monastery in Munster Indiana.

In 1987, the Carmelites in Munster purchased land in Korona for a monastery to minister to the large number of Polish Catholics in the area, and Father Joseph was selected to be the founder and first superior. Through his faithfulness and love, Father Joseph built the church, residence and prayer gardens that many thousands have visited. During his 33 years in Korona, Father Joseph celebrated Mass and heard confessions every day until his illness confined him to bed.

Father Joseph's viewing will be on Tuesday, July 6th from 2 PM -8 PM at Saint Joseph's Carmelite Monastery with the Divine Mercy Chaplet at 3 PM and Holy Rosary at 6 PM.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 7 at 4:00 PM with burial to follow in the Carmelite Monastery Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care and trust of Craig-Flagler Palms Cemetery.
