MRS. J. C. MERCER
On last Sunday morning the angel of death spread his black wings over the happy home of J. C. Mercer, and she who for a quarter of a century had crowned his home with happy smiles and joyful fellowship was called into eternity. Surely no death can be quite so sad, and no departure quite so sorrowful as that of a loving devoted mother. Mrs. Mercer filled such a large place in her home, in her community and in her Sunday school, where she was one of the teachers. Her going away is an irreparable loss, but while earth is poorer because of her going, heaven is richer and the gain is hers.
Her remains were laid to rest in the Deen Cemetery. At her old home near the cemetery her funeral was conducted. Here were gathered a large concourse of friends and relatives, with the crushed and brokenhearted husband and children to pay the last token of respect and devotion to the departed loved one. Frank, her oldest son, who lives in Florida, could not reach home in time for the burial.
She has bequeathed to all her loved ones a heritage far better than silver or gold. Certainly no one could have witnessed her exemplary life or enjoyed her Christian association without being drawn to the Savior whom she loved and served. While earth can never be just the same to some who loved her most, surely to them heaven will be nearer and dearer because of the assurance that she is there. Heaven's richest blessings abide sweetly on her sadly bereaved and lonely home. God guide all our feet into the path that leads to the mansions of the good that now are hers.
