Mr. Leonard Miles, highly respected citizen and pioneer of Appling County died at his home in Baxley on Sunday, Dec 25,at 11 o'clock a.m. The grand old Christian man entered the great beyond at the hour at which forty-five years of Sundays found him in his pace in the "earthly sanctuary."
His body was laid to rest in the Deen Cemetery, Rev G. C. Earnest, pastor of the Methodist Church; Rev J. C. Hancock, and Rev. B. D. Porter officiating at the grave. The Holmesville lodge of Masons taking part in the ceremonies. A large concourse of friends and relatives were present to pay the last tribute of respect and love to the deceased.
He was born Jul 25, 1851 in this county. He was the son of John and Harriet Kemp Miles who came from North Carolina to Appling County in early childhood. He is a representative member of the well known Miles family which has produced several ministers of the gospel and is famous for deep piety.
Mr. Miles was married in 1875 to Miss Polly Ann Mississippi Deen who with three children, Mrs. J. W. Bowen and Mrs. Will C. Parker of Baxley; Mrs. George Moody of Bunnell, and one sister, Mrs. Jane Leggett of Patterson, survive him. Four children preceded him to the grave.
He spent most of his life on the farm and during that time he did much constructive work, always lending his influence for the good of his community. He was Superintendent of Sunday School for 20 years and until his failing health forced him to abandon all work, both public and private.
He was a member of the Methodist Church, the Masonic Order, and the order of the K of P.
Few men have passed from the stage of action in this community have been so worthily eulogized as the deceased; few men have lived so wisely and well.
