G. H. Barber, tax assessor for Flagler County for the past eight years, died of typhoid fever in a St. Augustine hospital Friday morning, January 8, after several weeks illness.
Mr. Barber had been ill for some time before he was carried to the hospital, an after arriving there he was given a blood transfusion in an effort to stop hemorrhage which had set in, his brother, Eulice Barber, gave the necessary blood. Several other persons here and at St. Augustine offered to give blood for transfusions also if necessary.
The body was placed in charge of the Craig undertaking establishment of St. Augustine and was brought to Bunnell Sunday where funeral services were held from the Methodist church, with Rev. J. M. DeVette and Rev. John B. Culpepper, officiating. Internment was made in Espanola Cemetery.
The funeral was attended by one of the largest crowds ever seen here. The church auditorium was filled and approximately 200 persons were outside on the church lawn during the service. Practically all of these followed the body to it last resting place where services at the grave were conducted by the local Masonic lodge, Hon. Charles Hyde, district deputy grand master of Palatka, has charge of the Masonic services.
The deceased was born in Appling County, Georgia, November 23, 1899, but spent practically all of his life in this place, having been educated in the public schools of this county. He was for several years an employee of the Florida East Coast Railway here and shortly after leaving that company ran for county tax assessor and was elected by a large majority. At the next election he was unopposed and was nominated and elected again. Many taxpayers asserting that he was one of the most efficient and courteous county officials ever to be born here.
Mr. Barber was a member of the local Baptist church, Masonic and other fraternal societies and was an enthusiastic worker in these.
Surviving the deceased is his widow, two children, Shelton and Anna Belle; his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Barber of Bunnell, four sisters, Mrs. C. G Varn of St. Augustine, Mrs. S. A. Barker of Seville, Miss Ellie Barber and Miss Audrey Barber and one brother, Eulice Barber, all of this place. Also a number of other relatives reside here and in other sections of the county.
