LONGTIME COMMUNITY ACTIVIST, DEEN, 85
by Carl Laundrie, Staff Writer

BUNNELL - Freda Montgomery Deen, 85, a longtime community activist in Flagler County, died Saturday at Florida HospitalFlagler after a long illness.

Mrs. Deen was born in Atlanta and moved to Bunnell from Apalachicola with her family while she was still in high school.

She graduated from the former Bunnell High School and married the late William Welch Deen Sr., a member of one of the pioneering families of Flagler County.

She was active in a number of community organizations, including The Pioneers of Bunnell, The Idlewood Club, The Flagler County Historical Society, The United Daughters of the Confederacy's Joseph Eggleston Johnson Chapter, the American Cancer Society-Reach to Recovery and First United Methodist Church of Bunnell.

From helping out with community projects to rallying the town against a road-widening project that would have cut down two old oak trees in front of her home, Mrs. Deen was an effervescent force in the city. She was always smiling and friendly and worked hard behind the scenes to improve the city.

"We were longtime friends," Bette McDaniel of Painters Hill said. "The whole community will miss her; they just loved her. I especially will miss her."

Survivors include her son, William Welch Deen Jr. of Tampa; her daughter, Delores Regina Deen of Mount Dora; and four grandchildren.
