Pvt. Norman Gerald Lane, son of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Lane of Espanola, passed away Friday afternoon in the Naval Hospital in Jacksonville after a brief illness.

Pvt. Lane was stricken late Wednesday and was carried by Craig ambulance to the Flagler Clinic and Hospital here early Thursday morning where the diagnosis was spinal meningitis. Thursday afternoon young Lane was carried by a Navy ambulance to the Naval Hospital in Jacksonville where he passed away about 6 o'clock Friday afternoon. He was 23 years old.

Pvt. Lane had been in the Army two months and had completed his basic training at Camp Gordon. He arrived here December 18 for a 15.day furlough with his parents and other members of the family. He was scheduled to leave January 2 for a tour of duty with the Army in Alaska.

Funeral service was held at the Craig Funeral Chapel Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with Ruby Smith in charge. A military graveside service was conducted by members of his company from Camp Gordon. Rev. Thomas Pinner of the First Baptist Church officiated for the committal. Interment was in the Espanola Cemetery.

Young Lane was born in Birmingham, Ala., and had resided in Flagler County with his family for the past nine years.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Lane, Espanola; five sisters, Debbie Lane, Espanola; Mrs. Johnny Lynn, Mrs. June Dodgen, Bunnell; Mrs. Pat Noble, Miami; Mrs. Gloria Freeman, Atlanta; one brother, Robert Lane, Espanola.
