Myrtle G. Rice, 79, Hammock Area, died July 8, at the Bunnell General Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was born in Graham, N.C., and taught school for 16 years before moving to Flagler County, where she taught an additional 16 years. Funeral services were Monday at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Bunnell, with Rev. Hollis Bass officiating. Internment was at Espanola Cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, John; two daughters, Mrs. Hazel Smith, Graham, N.C.; Venita Strock, Daytona Beach; two sons, N.L. Cockman, Pensacola; A.W. Cockman, Pleasant Garden, N.C.; one sister, Mrs. W.G. Guthrie, Graham, N.C.; three brothers, Dan P. Gates, Mebaine, N.C.; Earl P. Gates, Snow Camp, N.C.; Rev. Don M. Gates, Ramsuer, N.C.; and eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Marvin Strickland, Harry Moody, Cary Holland, Clifford Higginbotham, C.H. Muzyka and Roger Edwards.
Mrs. Rice was a member of the Flagler County School Board for 8 years, The State of Florida School Board Association, Florida Education Commission, an honorary member of the International Delta Kappa Gamma, a member of the First Baptist Church of Bunnell where she sang in the choir for 14 years and taught Sunday School. She was listed in Personalities of the South, Community Leaders and Noteworthy Americans, Who's Who in American Women, Who's Who in Education and Who's Who in Women of the World. She also served on the Board of Directors for the Children's Home Society, and the Flagler County Chamber of Commerce. .
Craig Funeral Home, Bunnell, was in charge of arrangements.
