James M. Thompson, 83, of Espanola, died in the East Coast Hospital in St. Augustine at 9 o'clock Friday morning, February 6, following an illness of three years duration.
Mr. Thompson was born in Knaresboro, England, in September, 1858, and resided there for a number of years. He served in the British army for a number of years before coming to the United States. After coming to America he settled near St. Augustine where he lived for a number of years. He was employed by the Florida East Coast Railroad for 25 years, retiring about 14 years ago while living at Key West. Following his retirement, he moved to Espanola where he has since resided.
Mr. Thompson, familiarly known as "Uncle Jimmy" to his many friends, was a member of the Episcopal Church and Biscayne Bay Masonic Lodge of Miami.
Funeral services were held at ten o'clock Sunday morning from the First Baptist Church here with Rev. R. P. Tomlinson, pastor of the church, officiating. Members of the Bunnell Masonic Lodge conducted services at the graveside. Burial was in the Espanola Cemetery with McCabe funeral home of St. Augustine in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include one son, Private James Andrew Thompson of Espanola and Camp Blanding; one step-daughter, Mrs. David Millard of Miami; two sisters, Mrs. Flora C. Burnside of Espanola, and Mrs. Annie Bravo of Miami; also one brother, L. G. Thompson of Miami. Active pallbearers were Henry Wells, Steve Sparkman, M. B. Fuller, John Rice, Dean Holland, and Rudye Shamblen.
