Sonia Patricia Atkinson was born on October 5th, 1964, in St. Michael, Barbados. She was the third child of Otto and Coral Hinkson.
Sonia exuded a happy disposition, possessed a great sense of humor and a contagious laugh. She was a high achiever, excellent orator and a leader on many levels. She displayed a great passion for life and God. She received her primary and secondary education at Erdiston Model School and Queens College in Barbados.
After immigrating to the United States, she graduated Valedictorian from Eiseman Junior High in New York and successfully completed a program specializing in Science and Mathematics from Stuyvesant High School in New York City, graduating in 1982.
After receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Queens College NY, Sonia taught at Allen Christian School for a short period. In New York she was very involved in church ministries and was the first youth president in Queens Wesleyan Church. Later, she worked in children’s ministries at Victory Christian Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma where she lived for many years.
After moving to Florida, she became a stay at home mom and homeschooled her son Michael. Subsequently, she acquired a sales manager position at Realtors and Vacation Homes where she received many awards for her accomplishments. Sonia was fondly known by some as the “Mayor of Palm Coast” because she could answer any question pertaining to the city.
She was a great debater and always defended her position with zest and fervor. We will always keep this lasting memory of her.
Sonia was a loving mother and wife and was loved by her husband, Michael, her children, Michael David, Christina and Alesha. Her parents Otto and Coral adored her along with her sister Pam and brother Stephen. She also leaves nieces, a nephew, extended family, close friends and peers to morn her loss. Sonia, you will be greatly missed!
