BEVERLY BEACH - Richard J. Comeau, 80, Windward Drive, a machinist and foreman at Transitron, Melrose, Mass., died Friday at Florida Hospital Flagler, Palm Coast.
Born in Melrose, Mass., Mr. Comeau, a Marine veteran of World War II and retired as lieutenant colonel after 25 years of service, moved to this area in 1985 from New Hampshire. He served in the Battle of Iwo Jima, was the division commander for the 182nd Infantry Division, Melrose, the Battalion commander for the 26th Calvary Unit and was the maintenance officer for the Massachusetts Army National Guard.
He was a member of Santa Maria del Mar Catholic Church, served as mayor for two terms for Beverly Beach and was park commissioner at Surfside Estates. He enjoyed bowling, playing cards and church activities.
Survivors include four sons, .Richard Jr., Cape Neddick, Maine, Douglas, Boston, Michael, Saugus, Mass., and Gerald, Boxford, Mass.; a daughter, Suzanne Diamond, Lawrence, Mass.: a brother, Thomas, Arizona; a sister, Dorothy Archaki, Newburyport, Mass.; and nine grandchildren.

Memorial Mass celebrating the life of Richard J. Comeau Sr., 80, Windward Drive, Beverly Beach, who passed away Friday, October 27, 2006, at Florida Hospital Flagler, Palm Coast, was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 18, at Santa Maria del Mar Catholic Church, 915 N. Central Ave., Flagler Beach, Fla. Inurnment followed the Mass at Flagler Palms Memorial Gardens, Flagler Beach.
Richard was born August 18, 1926, in Melrose, Mass., to the late Louis M. and Adele M. (Mucse) Comeau. He is a U.S. Marine World War II veteran who served in the Battle of Iwo Jima. Richard also served as the Division Commander for the 182nd Infantry Division in Melrose, Mass., and was the Battalion Commander for the 26th Calvary Unit. Richard moved to Beverly Beach in 1985, coming from New Hampshire. While here he was a member of Santa Maria del Mar Catholic Church, served as Mayor of Beverly Beach for two terms, and was the Park Commissioner at Surfside Estates in Beverly Beach. Richard enjoyed bowling, playing cards, and church activities, including the Men's Club at Santa Maria del Mar Catholic Church.
He is survived by his four sons, Richard Comeau Jr., Cape Neddick, Maine, Douglas Comeau, Boston, Mass, Michael and his wife, Jeanette Comeau, Saugus, Mass, and Gerald and his wife, Susan Comeau, Boxford, Mass.; his daughter, Suzanne Diamond and her husband George, Lawrence, Mass. Additional survivors include his sister, Dorothy Archaki, Newburyport, Mass.; his brother, Thomas Comeau, Arizona; and his nine grandchildren. Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Claire Comeau; his sisters, Hilda Brogan and Agnes Devlin; and his brother, Louis Comeau.
