Funeral service for U.S. Navy Retired Rear Admiral Samuel Morton Cooley Jr., Clinton Court South, Palm Coast, who died at home Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, will be 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at Shepherd of the Coast Lutheran Church, 101 Pine Lakes Parkway, Palm Coast, with the Rev. William Douthwaite officiating. Burial will follow at Flagler Palms Memorial Gardens with full military honors provided by the honor guard of the U.S. Navy.

The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, in the chapel of Craig-Flagler Palms Funeral Home, 511 Old Kings Road S., Flagler Beach.

Rear Admiral Cooley was born Sept. 13, 1921, in Kingston, Pa., a son of the late Samuel Morton and Emily Flanagan Cooley. He was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in 1944 and served as a naval aviator during World War II and the Korean conflict.

Rear Admiral Cooley was the executive officer of the USS Guadalcanal, the Commander of USS Wasp, USS Cankekee and VS #32, he served as the commander of the Pacific Patrol Wing and the Icelandic Defense Force with NATO and served on the staff of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon.

After retirement from the Navy, he founded SM Associates and was the author of several aviation journals still used in training in the U.S. Navy today.

He was a member of Shepherd of the Coast Lutheran Church, Gideon's International, M.O.A.A., the Navy League, the Naval Aviator of America, the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association, the Businessmen Fellowship International and the Flagler County Orchid Society.

Surviving is his wife of 57 years, lzola.
