Obituary of Gina Ann Cummings

Gina Ann Cummings, 51, was born on September 3, 1968 in Brooklyn, NY to Maryanne and Thomas Joseph Cummings. She departed this life on Thursday, May 14, 2020 at Shands Hospital.
She received her Associate’s Degree from Kingsborough Community College and then worked for the NYPD for 15 years. In 2014, Gina and her mother moved to Ormond Beach, Florida, where she volunteered as a fundraising coordinator for the auxiliary department at AdventHealth.

Gina was fierce and strong-willed. Despite her spina bifida, she met every challenge head-on, and she was dedicated to a life without limitations. This dedication shone through her passions for travel and gymnastics, where she continually defied anything that stood in her way. At an early age, Gina was selected as a Poster Child for the March of Dimes organization.

Gina was a woman of her word, and if she committed to something, she committed to it completely and wholeheartedly. She enjoyed cooking and shopping, and she told long stories, never omitting a single detail. She loved all things Paris, pink, and Celine Dion. She loved Wheel of Fortune, Scooby Doo, and princesses, especially Cinderella. She had strong faith, and she always found comfort in God’s plan.

Gina is preceded in death by her father and step-father, Pat Viola. She is survived by her mother, Maryanne, her brother, Thomas John Cummings, her sister-in-law, Laura Gunn, and her niece, Ashley Cummings, along with many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Gina adored Mary Lou Retton, a 1984 Olympic gymnast, who befriended Gina and was one of Gina’s champions. In Out of the Blue, Mary Lou Retton wrote about Gina, “…the way she faced and overcame incredible obstacles makes her a true inspiration to us all.”

Through everything, Gina was a fighter. She never gave up, and her bravery and resilience in the face of trial and uncertainty were truly amazing. She was an inspiration, and she remains loved and cherished by her family.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass celebrating her life on Monday, May 18, 2020 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Korona FL at 2:00 PM. Entombment will follow in Flagler Palms Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the Craig-Flagler Palms Funeral Home, 511 Old Kings Road S. Flagler Beach on Monday from 11:00 AM until 1:30 PM. A reception will be held at the Funeral Home immediately following the entombment on Monday.

We are remembering Gina with memorial contributions to St. Jude Children’s Hospital and the Spina Bifida Association.
