GLADYS DEEN, FLAGER REGISTRAR, DIES AT 69

BUNNELL - - Mrs. Gladys N. Deen, 59 (69), Flagler County Supervisor of Elections since October, 1948, died yesterday at Halifax Hospital.

Born in Ramsey, NJ, Mrs. Deen had lived in DuPont since 1933. She was appointed to the office of County Registrar on the death of her husband in 1948 and has been reelected ever since. However, this year she decided to step down and three women ran for her vacated post, with Mrs. Raymond Smith the ultimate winner.

She was a member of the Flagler Business and Professional Woman's Club.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Frances Wetherington, Willow, Alaska, and Mrs. Naomi Hoffman, Merritt Island: one son Stanley, Freeport, Grand Bahamas; two brothers Reese Close, Ramsey, NJ and Stanley Close, Haledone, NJ and one sister, Mrs. Mildred Nyland, Bunnell.

Grave side service is planned at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hope Cemetery, east of Bunnell. Craig Funeral Home is in charge.

Mrs. Gladys Deen, Flagler County Supervisor of Registration since 1948, passed away Monday afternoon at the Halifax Hospital following an illness of several months. She was the widow of the late James Emmett Deen of Bunnell.

Mrs. Deen was born in Ramsey, N. J., and has resided in Dupont since 1930. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women's club, and the State Association of Supervisors. She was 69 years of age.

She was appointed supervisor of registration in October of 1948 to succeed her husband who had filled the office for several terms. She had been re-elected each term until this year when she did not seek re-election due to her health. She planned to retire at the end of the year.

She is survived by a son, Stanley Deen of Freeport, Grand Bahamas; two daughters, Mrs. Frances Wetherington of Willow, Alaska, and Mrs. Naomi Hoffman of Merritt Island, Florida; five step-children, Lester and June Deen of Miami; Duane Deen of Bunnell; Thelma Walter, and Claude Deen of Christmas, Florida; one sister, Mrs. Mildred Nyland of Bunnell; two brothers, Stanley Close of Haledon, N. J. and Reece Close of Ramsey, N. J.

Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and nine step-grandchildren.

Graveside funeral service will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday (today) at Hope Cemetery, with Rev. Thomas Pinner of the First Baptist Church officiating.

Viewing was at the Craig Chapel, 201 East Moody Boulevard, from 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon until 1 o'clock Thursday afternoon.

Active pallbearers are: C. M. Miller, C. H. Cowart, Otis Hunter, Jack Clegg, George Moody, Jr., D. D. Moody. Honorary are Walter Cody, H. T. Cook, E. A. Smythe, Dale Brown, Raymond Smith, Dean Holland, Alfred Tucker, George Wickline, Howard Taylor, Ernest Taylor, T. K. McKnight, M. C. Strickland, Jr., Billy Wadsworth, Homer Brooks, and Tilman Robinson.

Arrangements are under the direction of Craig Funeral Home of Bunnell.
