FLAGLER WOMAN KILLED, TODDLER RESCUED IN SUV ROLLOVER
By Heather Scofield, Staff Writer

PALM COAST -- Flagler County Sheriff Donald Fleming was on a lunch run Wednesday when a sport utility vehicle went out of control right in front of him, killing the woman behind the wheel.

Fleming was able to pull the woman's 1-year-old daughter to safety from the wreckage shortly after noon but the mother's injuries were too severe.

Kimberly Frazier, 39, was heading south in the right lane of U.S. 1 near Kankakee Trail in the SUV with her daughter in the back seat. A tractor-trailer was passing the Palm Coast woman in the left lane. Fleming was not far behind in his agency-issued vehicle, sheriff's spokeswoman Debra Johnson confirmed.

Suddenly, the tractor-trailer veered to the left for a reason Florida Highway Patrol officials said is "still under investigation."

The abrupt move sent the rear fight side of the trailer on a collision course with Frazier's 2006 Chevy Blazer. The impact sent the sport utility vehicle barreling onto the right shoulder of the road. Frazier then over-corrected to the left, sending the SUV into a roll, the FHP said.

Frazier didn't survive the crash. But 1-year-oid Hannah Leveite was pulled from the back seat by Fleming. The girl was not injured in the wreck. Frazier's family was notified of the crash.

Fleming tried to render aid to Frazier, who was not wearing a seat belt when the accident occurred, officials said. But her injuries were too severe and Fleming was forced to wait for medical crews to arrive, Johnson said. Later in the day, through Johnson, Fleming declined comment on the crash. He said he only wanted to express his deep sympathy for Frazier's family.

The tractor-trailer was driven by James Wilkes, 50, of Green Cove Springs. He was not hurt in the crash. No charges have been filed pending further investigation.
