Ivanhoe Cecilon Heron, 100, of Palm Coast, died Monday, July 23, 2012 at the Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House. Mr. Heron was born on August 17, 1911 in Kingston, Jamaica, a son of Cleveland Heron and Rettinela Bromley. As a boy, Ivan enjoyed playing soccer and cricket and was an active swimmer, scout and cyclist. After his years in the Smithville, Jamaica countryside Ivan returned to Kingston in 1930.

In 1938 Ivan traveled to Panama after the Colon fire. There he worked in the quartermaster department of the Panama Canal building houses for the workers and later worked in the engineering department of the canal locks. Ivan returned to Jamaica in 1944. Later that year he immigrated to the U.S. to work in the War Manpower Program in Ohio and Bridgeport, CT. From 1947 to 1949 he worked for the Walton Lunch Company in Boston. He moved to New York City in 1949 where he worked as a machinist at the Hall Barkon Corporation.

He married Violet Ina Chang in 1956, and in 1959 they had a son Courtney. He and his family immigrated to Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1970, and then retired to Florida in 1975. He has been a resident of Palm Coast since 1987.

His wife, Violet Ina Heron, died in 2002.

He is survived by his son, Courtney (Lori) Heron of Naperville, IL.; two grandsons, Courtney Heron Jr., and David Heron, both of Naperville, IL.; one sister, Isolyn Williams of Detroit; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents and wife, he is preceded in death by a sister Mavis Allen.

Family and friends will be received Friday, July 27, 2012 from 4-7 p.m. at the Craig-Flagler Palms Funeral Home, 511 Old Kings Road South in Flagler Beach. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 28, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Palm Coast, 6050 Palm Coast Parkway NW, in Palm Coast, where friends will be received one hour prior to the funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Heron's name to Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House, 150 Memorial Medical Parkway, Palm Coast, FL 32164.
