Paul William Hill, 83, of St. Augustine, died Feb. 2, 2008, at Flagler Hospital. Mr. Hill was a native of Erie, Pa., born Sept. 23, 1924, and had resided in St. Augustine since November 2006, coming from North Carolina. Mr. Hill was a retired engineer for IBM and was a graduate of Vanderbilt University in 1949. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre where he was part of the assault and occupation of Iwo Jima. He received the American Theatre Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal and two commendations for performance of duty. He was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in St. Augustine.
Services: A funeral Mass celebrating his life will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton Catholic Church, 4600 Belle Terre Parkway, in Palm Coast. Calling hours: The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Burial: Flagler Palms Memorial Gardens with military honors rendered by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard.
Survivors: His daughters, Paula Watt and Marian Johns, both of St. Augustine, and Jolene Hill, Boca Raton; one son, Thomas Hill, St. Augustine; sisters, Judy Morrin and Shirley Heffner, both of Orange City, and Joann Jakubowski, Chicago, Ill.; one brother, Donald Hill, Pittsburgh, Pa.; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, JoAnne Hill, and his parents, Joseph and Gertrude Pender Hill.
The family suggests contributions to Catholic Charities of the Diocese of St. Augustine in his memory.
