THE HAMMOCK -- Wilmuth Helen Brisendine Likins, 87, of North Oceanshore Boulevard, a pioneer resident of this area and current clerk of Precinct 10, died Sunday at home.
Mrs. Likins was born in Crossland, Tenn., and came here in 1945 from Louisville, Ky. She was a founding member of Johnson Memorial Chapel, the Hammock Women's Association, the Hammock Civic Association and the Hammock Business and Homeowners Association. She and her late husband, Roy E., came up with the idea to build a pier at Marineland, which was completed in 1961. At more than 1,000 feet long, it was the longest steel structure on the East Coast at the time. The family owned and operated a restaurant there before it was destroyed by Hurricane Donna a year later.
Before her retirement, she was deputy of the Flagler County Supervisor of Elections office , worked for 10 years for the Marineland Gift Shop and was the co-owner of a restaurant and motel north of Marineland. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and flower gardening.
Survivors include a daughter, S. Diane Likins, Flagler Beach; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Craig, Palm Coast, is in charge.
