Joseph A. McCarthy, 60, of 24 Medford Drive, Palm Coast, FL, formerly of Mahopac, NY, husband of Jacqueline (Galchik) McCarthy and son of Julia (Spillane) McCarthy of Danbury, died on Saturday, September 16, 2000 at his Florida home.
Mr. McCarthy was born in Ossining, NY, February 25, 1940, a son of Julia (Spillane) McCarthy of Danbury and the late Joseph J. McCarthy. He attended Ossining schools and graduated from Stepinac High School, White Plains, NY in the graduating Class of 1958. As a student at Stepinac High School, he was a member of its football team and served as captain of the team in 1958. He later attended the University of Detroit on a football scholarship.
A longtime Mahopac resident, where the McCarthy's raised their family, Sperry Univac Company employed Mr. McCarthy for many years. He later joined his wife in the owning and operating Wicker Expressions, furniture and basket retail operation with stores in Mahopac, Mohegan Lake, Wappingers Falls and Hyde Park, New York.
Mr. And Mrs. McCarthy relocated to Palm Coast, FL in 1997.
He was a US Air Force veteran having served during the Vietnam War and a former member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church of Shrub Oak, NY.
He enjoyed fishing and boating and spent many hours in early years on the Hudson River.
To those who knew him, he was a man of strong motivation and tenacity. He was the pillar of the family. His love of life and his family was his reason for being. He will be sorely missed.
In addition to his spouse of 32 years and his mother, he is survived by two sons, Timothy J. McCarthy of Mahopac and Joseph J. McCarthy of Trenton, NJ; two daughters, Karin McCarthy of Danbury and Dawn Mignotte of Cortland, NY; three sisters, Kathleen Kilmer of New Fairfield, Peggyann Gioia of Sherman and Sheila Barrett of Bethel; two grandchildren, Alexandra and Timothy; and seven nieces and nephews, Claire, David, Julie, Honora, Katherine, Peter and Elizabeth.
A brother, Lt. Timothy J. McCarthy, predeceased Mr. McCarthy, who was killed in action in Vietnam.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, September 23, 2000, at 2 p.m. in St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 1377 East Main Street, Shrub Oak, NY.
There will be no calling hours.
