FLAGLER BEACH -- Bette McDaniel, 77, of Pelican Lane, a former managing editor for the Flagler Tribune, died Saturday at The Terrace, Daytona Beach.

Ms. McDaniel was born in Daytona Beach and was a lifelong resident, and was also a supervisor for Southern Bell. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Bunnell, Flagler Beach Women's Club, Idlewood Club, Daughters of the Confederacy, Eastern Star and the Flagler County Historical Society. Ms. McDaniel enjoyed playing bridge, crossword puzzles, and donated her time and effort to the American Cancer Society.

Survivors include a son, Robert, Flagler Beach; a brother, Owen Shelton, Ocala; and a grandchild. Memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church of Bunnell, P.O. Box 335, Bunnell, FL 32110. Craig-Flagler Palms, Flagler Beach, is in charge.

McDANIEL, BETTE - Bette McDaniel, 77, Painters Hill, a former editor and business manager of the Flagler Tribune and avid historian, passed away Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at The Terrace Nursing Home, Daytona Beach. She was born March 16, 1927, in Daytona Beach and was a lifelong resident of Flagler County.

Bette has a long history with newspapers in Flagler County. Her father-in-law, A. M. McDaniel bought the Flagler Tribune, Flagler County's first newspaper, in 1924 along with M.B. Fuller and was associated with the paper until 1966. Bette McDaniel served in various posts at the newspaper after it was purchased by Jack Clegg In 1967. She assisted in switching the paper to offset printing and the addition of color and several other printing firsts for Flagler County. Bette continued to work at the Flagler Tribune after Clegg sold the paper to the Florida Times Union in 1973 serving at times as editor and business manager. She retired from the paper in 1980.

Bette was active in the community as an advocate for preserving the history of Flagler County. She helped form the Flagler County Historical Society and was a charter member of the organization volunteering many countless hours to the efforts to preserve the county's history. While at the newspaper each edition was saved and placed in bound editions each year and carefully preserved under the direction of Bette. The bound editions of the newspaper contributed greatly to the recording of historic events in Flagler County.

Bette was active in the community. She was a member of the Flagler Beach Women's Club, The Id­lewood Club, Daughters of the Confederacy, Easter Star and worked tirelessly for the American Cancer Society. She enjoyed fishing.

She and her late husband, Martin "Bo" McDaniel built their Painters Hill home next to the couple's favorite fishing spot. Bo McDaniel was the director of the Flagler County Housing Authority. When she wasn't busy with community projects, Bette enjoyed playing bridge and working crossword puzzles. She was also a member of the Bunnell Methodist Church and served as a member of the Trustee Committee and also worked with the youth of the church.

She is survived by her son, Robert McDaniel, Flagler Beach; brother, Owen C. Shelton, Ocala; and a grandson, John Martin McDaniel, Birds, Ill.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, with a service to follow at First United Methodist Church of Bunnell with Pastor Beth Gardner officiating.
