Honoring One of Our Veterans
By Ron Schmucker

Honored in the Warrior room of the VFW Post #8696 with a display of his Navy decorations and momentums this month is Ted Meyers.

Ted was drafted at the age of 18 in September 1943 and given an opportunity to choose his branch of service. He chose the Navy and attended boot camp and 16 weeks of Quartermaster school at Bainbridge Maryland. He then headed to the Pacific aboard LST-1018, leaving New York on July 9, 1944 and crossing the equator on August 4, 1944.

Ted saw combat In the Pacific serving as a Quartermaster and Signalman. He was honorably discharged in April 1946 as a Quartermaster Petty Officer Second Class. His decorations include the Pacific Theater medal with one Battle Star, the Philippine Liberation medal with one Battle Star, the American Theater metal and the World War II Victory medal. He served the Navy for two years, seven months and 28 days of active duty.

Ted retired from the U.S. General Services Administration after 19 years of Federal Service and moved to Palm Coast in 1985. He joined the VFW Post 8696 as a Life Member in 1994 and has been a BINGO volunteer and a member of our Post Honor Guard. Ted felt strongly about contributing time and effort to the Post and has also answered the call with a generous purchase of Post debentures.

As the Post bugler, Ted played taps to honor our departed comrades at each monthly meeting, at appropriate Holiday Memorial Services and at burial services of our Members and other Veterans. A sour note is never heard from 8696'5 special bugle.

Ted met his wife, Ellen, an Auxiliary member, at our VFW Hall in 1993 on Veterans Day. They were married in 1998 and would have celebrated their 10th Anniversary next year. (They were spotted holding hands at a recent Post Sunday brunch.) Ted has one son, who is deceased and has a daughter with three grandsons.

Thanks for your World War II Navy service Ted and your sterling support of our Post. As Ted plays taps, a tear can be seen in the eyes of old Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen, Coast Guard and the comfort, solace and pride can be observed on the faces of deceased Comrades' families.

Day is done
Gone the sun From the sea, from the hills, from the sky
All is well -- safely rest
