MACHIAS, NEWPORT and FLAGLER BEACH, Fla. – Clayton R. Morse, 74, passed away peacefully July 11, 2011, at a Portland hospital with his wife, daughter and son-in-law by his side. Clayton was born April 13, 1937, in Machias, son of Dorothy Morse and Robert Mallar. 

Clayton grew up in Machias, graduated from Machias Memorial High School and after four years in the U.S. Air Force he attended and graduated from the University of Maine at Machias. He was a past president and longtime member of Lions Club.

Clayton held several positions with the state of Maine, and also worked as a lobster fisherman and carpenter before his retirement. He enjoyed his snowbird status spending winters in Flagler Beach, Fla., and summers on Lake Sebasticook in Newport. He spent much of his retirement time volunteering in the various schools where he lived. 

Clayton is survived by his wife, Polly; his daughter, Laurie Cobb and her husband, Tim; grandson, Tyler; and his brother, George "Mac" MacFadyen. He had two stepchildren, Eric DesMarais and Caryn DesMarais Barman. 

A memorial service for Clayton will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, July 16, at Middle River Reach Training Center in the Kay Parker Building, Hadley Lake Road, Machias. 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the American Diabetes Association.
