Graveside services for Samuel “Sam” Newton, 91, of Palm Coast FL will be held on Friday, December 18 at 10:30 AM in Flagler Palms Memorial Gardens, 511 Old Kings Road S. Flagler Beach. The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 17 from 2:00 to 6:00 PM in the chapel of Craig-Flagler Palms Funeral Home. A memorial service and time of remembrance will be held at 5:00 PM Thursday.

Sam, originally from Milford CT, and a resident of Palm Coast since 1984, passed away on Friday December 4, 2009 at his home. He was born on March 17, 1918, in Hartford CT. Sam attended the NYU School of Engineering, and was a veteran, having served in the US Army Signal Corps. Sam’s business activities included Network Operations with CBS/New York. Prior to his retirement from many years in convention and travel management, Newton was photographer/owner of Newton Studios in Milford and instructor/area manager with the Dale Carnegie Courses of Connecticut .

An active Rotarian his entire life, Sam first joined the Milford, Connecticut, Rotary Club in February 1948, served as its president in 1959, and was named Rotarian of the Year in 1983-84. He held memberships in both the Rotary Club of Flagler County where he was President in 1986-87 and the bulletin editor for many years, and the Rotary Club of Flagler Beach. In the late 1990’s, Newton was named Rotarian of the Decade by the three Rotary Clubs in Flagler County. He was a Paul Harris Fellow (Sapphire) and a Sustaining Member of The Rotary Foundation. He had also received an IDD Hixson from the Kiwanis Club of Flagler/Palm Coast for his many years of service to their organization.

Locally, Sam was a member of Temple Beth Shalom of Palm Coast, the American Legion, the Palm Coast Boating Association, Flagler County Personnel Association, the Chamber of Commerce, the Advisory Council of Flagler County Adult Education, the New England Club, and AARP. Previously, he served as president of both the Democratic Club and the Art League of Flagler County, was a correspondent for the Flagler Palm Coast News Tribune for many years, a former member of the Palm Coast Service District Advisory Council, and The Interim Health Care Advisory Board. In Connecticut, his community activities and service work included chairing the Community Division of United Way and the Milford Brotherhood Committee. He was also a scoutmaster and unit commissioner for the Boy Scouts of Milford and former Director of the Milford Chapter of the American Red Cross. He enjoyed bridge, woodcarving, writing, photography, computer desktop publishing and traveling.

Preceding him in death was his daughter, Pamela Moffitt.

On December 24, 1941, Sam married the love of his life, Shirley Price Newton, and they had almost 68 years of a wonderful marriage. Also surviving are daughter, Lesley E. and husband Donald Gottlinger of Forest Park, IL; son, Jon P. and wife Dee Newton, three grandchildren, Hannah, Sam, and Melanie of West Hartford, CT; son-in-law John A. and wife Maryanne Moffitt of Milford, Connecticut; and brother, Albert and wife Blanche Newton of Newport News, VA.
